Haywood & Jackson was appointed by Balfour Beatty to undertake structural steelwork repairs and all strengthening works to the bridge and piers at St Julian’s Viaduct in Newport, South Wales. The bridge had undergone renovation works back in the 1960’s. However, with signs of further deterioration and plans to expand its capacity, Network Rail commissioned this development project in 2014 for the refurbishment and repairs to the 140 year old structure.

Haywood & Jackson successfully completed the steelwork repairs and all strengthening works on this major railway structure, including additional works required discovered by the contractor during the blasting phase, in three months.

Scope Of Work

  • Strengthening of the vertical parapet posts on each side of the bridge.
  • Repairs to the deck plates under the bridge and beams using stainless steel welded plates.
  • Installation of new stainless steel drainage points under the bridge.
  • Installation of new bracing on all piers.

The entire project team had to overcome extremely challenging working conditions throughout the project. The tidal range of the River Usk was significant, reaching depths of up to 13 meters at high tide. At the time the work was undertaken, the area had also experienced flooding which meant that the river levels were much higher than usual.

Careful planning was required to fit our work programme around the tides, rigorous risk assessments were undertaken, and continuous assessment of health and safety practices for our engineers was paramount. During the works, innovative working practices were adopted to minimise the impact on the operations of the waterways, to provide a safe place to work for our engineers, and to overcome the environmental challenges. Such practices included erecting floating pontoon platforms around the piers and the use of boats.
